Intercultural Dialogue in China-Europe Relations(1): Entangled Cultural Heritage as Intercultural Bridging

Professor Ottmar Ette, Director of the Humboldt Center for Transdisciplinary Studies, will host an academic forum titled “Entangled Cultural Heritage as Intercultural Bridging,” part of the series “Intercultural Dialogue in China-Europe Relations,” at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities on July 7, 2026. Professor Ren Haiyan, Deputy Director of the Center, will also attend and deliver remarks. Following is the brief introduction of this conference and its programme.

Our shared cultural heritage can be understood as something that, at least at first glance, may seem no longer to exist, yet cannot cease to be. Our cultural heritage is interconnected across the world. Humboldt’s legacy, for example, which we study in Berlin or Kraków, carries complex significance not only for Germany or Poland, but also for the Indigenous cultures of Latin America, for the Spanish-speaking world of the Americas, and for the global community as a whole.

This German-Chinese symposium, organized by the Prussia-Berlin Center in cooperation with Xiamen University, seeks to explore these entanglements from multiple perspectives. The program includes a series of lectures drawing on perspectives from the Chinese provinces of Fujian and Hunan, the German-French perspective on the restitution of cultural property to the Global South, Kraków in Poland, Rio de Janeiro, and the ongoing academy projects of the Center.

The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities affirms its responsibility to uncover, preserve, research, and bring into the present our shared cultural heritage. To this end, it has presented a purposeful manifesto. The symposium serves as the prelude to a congress to be organized at Xiamen University in China in September 2026, and sees itself as a platform for connecting important initiatives and institutions that feel responsible for our globally entangled cultural heritage.

An event organized by the Prussia-Berlin Center at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in cooperation with the Center for Exchanges and Mutual Learning among Civilizations at Xiamen University. Concept and organization: Ottmar Ette, Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities / Humboldt Center for Transdisciplinary Studies, Changsha; Liu Yue, Center for Exchanges and Mutual Learning among Civilizations, Xiamen University.
